Hisarmy life was one of almost eontiimal battles. He was in the battlesof Middle Creek, , Cliiekamauga, Lookout Moun-tain, Mission Ridge, Buzzards Roost, Dalton, Resaca, Kingston,Altoona. Pinetop Mountain, Kenesaw, Chattahoochee, Ieaeh TreeCreek and the storming of Atlanta. During the battle of Chiekamaugahis regiment lost forty-five per cent of their numbers in killed and. He was on continuous dutyfor seventeen days in front of Keuesaw, and often for weeks underfire almost constantly. Tlie last year of bis army life he was sergeantand clerk to the adjutant general at brigade headquarters. Returninghome he settled in Richmond, in 186G, where he lived ever after. Hewas at first a contractor and builder, but later engaged in the insur-ance business. He was always a Republican in politics, and was acandidate for the office of county clerk in 1894, and again in 1898 be-ing elected to the office Nov. 8 of that year. He was a valued mem-berof many orders—of Richmond Lodge, No. 196, F. and A. M., KingSolomon Chapter, No. 4, R. A. M., Woodward Lodge, No. 212,1. F., and Encampment No. 28, of the same order; a commander ofSol Meredith Post, No. 55, G. A. R. Mr. Doane was a member ingood standing of the religious Society of Friends, in which his fat
