A Herdwick ewe and lambs graze on the shores of Derwentwater in the English Lake District. Herdwicks are typical Lakeland sheep.
Herdwick sheep are native to the English lake District. They have lived there since at least the 12th century. Their origins are unknown but it is thought they were brought to the Lake District by Norse settlers. The breed is extremely hardy and well suited to the climate of the English lake District. It is thought that 99% of the breed are farmed in the central and western Lake District. Whilst their wool may not be of the top quality they are pized for their hardy natire, their robust health, ability to thrive on forage and their tendency not to stray but stay in their own territory on the fell sides.
