Crowd, Demonstration Rally in Support of Increased Timber Logging
Pro timber and logging rally in downtown Portland, Oregon, USA (April 10, 1990), for people and groups in support of increased logging in National Forests throughout the West United States. [See Also: A4BM2G, A4BM1Y, A4BM1X] Some of the demonstrators were also opposed to parts of the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and special protections it provided for some animal species, such as the Spotted Owl. The demonstration was orderly and peaceful, and was well covered by TV, radio, and newspapers and other print news media. How National Forests and our whole ecosystem are utilized, protected, managed, and conserved -- for timber, mining, wildlife, hunting, recreation, biodiversity, clean air and water -- has long been, and will continue to be a very contentious issues throughout Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, the nation, Canada, and all of North America. There are no simple answers. Quite fittingly, the rally was held in a one-block public area called Pioneer Square, near the historic Pioneer Courthouse.
