Atlantic storms, radar image. This map, centred on the Atlantic, shows wind speeds measured by radar from the QuikSCAT satellite. Colours indicate wind speed, from fast (orange), through medium (purple) to low (blue). The white lines and arrows show the wind directions. Several large storms (orange) are seen in this image, obtained on 20 September 1999. At centre left, in the Caribbean, is Hurricane Gert. Smaller storms are seen in the Gulf of Mexico (Tropical Storm Harvey) and the eastern Pacific (Tropical Storm Hilary). A large storm is also seen in the southern Atlantic. On land, the radar data shows rainforests as bright green compared to the dark green of deserts. Radar data from QuikSCAT's SeaWinds scatterometer.
