Onanism. Title page of a 1737 book condemning onanism - the practice of withdrawing the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation. The word derives from the biblical character Onan, son of Judah, who used the technique during sex with his brother's wife, for which he was slain by God. The term was once frequently used, wrongly, to mean masturbation, as in John Bucknill's Manual of Psychological Medicine (1874): \Onanism is a frequent accompaniment of insanity and sometimes causes it\"."
