German carnival is at its most boisterous in Cologne, whose residents are generally considered to be carnival fanatics. These women are on celebrating on Cologne's Alter Markt square for Weiberfastnacht (Old Wives' Day), the traditional opening of the main carnival season. On Weiberfastnacht women cut off men's ties in symbolic castration and storm town halls in the Rhineland region.
