A few years after the war the Orleans Railroad was builtby a company of French-American gentlemen and operatedas a horse line. Ample returns were made to its ownersuntil with the equipment by electricity of other lines in. Statue on Canal Street, with the PVeuch residence sectionof Dauphine, Burgundy, Dumaine, St. Peter and UrsulinesStreets and with the picturesque French Market on theMississippi. The suburban termini are the well knownrace track of the Crescent CityJockey Club at the Fair Grounds,and the beautiful Bayou St. Johnwith its old Creole country of these localities, stimulatedby^the benefits of rapid transit, arebeing built up with the residencesof the working classes. The CityPark and Metairie Cemetery arepoints to which the company isnow seeking access, and due totheir natural and artificial attrac-tions will be sources of profitablerevenue. A visitor to New Orleans isimpressed with the dirtiness ofthe streets and the rough paving. New Orleans its traffic was di-verted and profits reduced.
