Coggia's Comet of 1874. Pencilled notes and drawings, by the British amateur astronomer George Henry With (1827-1904), of Coggia's Comet. This comet was discovered in 1874 by the French astronomer Jerome Eugene Coggia. The comet's modern designation is C/1874 H1. It was a sungrazing comet with a short period, and was in the skies from early June to August of that year. It had two large tails (seen here), which stretched more than 60 degrees across the sky. This comet returned in 1877 and in 1882, at which point it broke up and disintegrated.
