All thecolumns in the building change from a larger to a smaller section at this level, producing a structural weakness which causedcliaracteristic X cracks in all the piers between the windows in the fourth and fifth stories. 130 front, the bond of the face brick is broken and sections havefallen off. Above the fifth story floor the nuillions and piersare racked and cracked bj the earthquake. In the northwest corner, six bays have entirely collapsed andfallen into the basement, except three bays of the roof tier. Inthe basement of the southeast wing, three columns failed bybuckling. One of the interior columns in the northwest cornerof the building, in the eighth story, also buckled, the doublelath and plaster protection having been broken away by a pipeinside of the protection, which bulged and disrupted the cover-ing.
