Despite its startling architecture, the Pavilion for Japanese Art is a tranquil attraction on the campus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), which extends over 20 acres (8 hectares) in Hancock Park in the heart of Los Angeles, California, USA. Translucent exterior walls allow natural light to illuminate the exhibits, which include Shinto and Buddhist sculpture, lacquer wares, paintings, textiles, cloisonne and ceramics. A feature of the museum that opened in 1988 is a collection of miniature carvings known as netsuke.
