Defterdar Mosque, Kos island, city center, Greece

This mosque, built in 1724 by Ibrahim Efendi the Treasurer, is one of two mosques that are open to worship on the island (the other being the mosque in the Turkish village of Platani). As it is in use, it is in quite good condition, both inside and out. The prayer hall and the portico are on the second floor of the two-story mosque, while the lower floor is leased out by the foundation to cafes and shops to provide an income. Next to the mosque is an ablution fountain known by the same name, which is octagonal in shape and has six columns. The minaret, which has a single balcony, was restored in 1991 by the Department of Foundations belonging to the Turks living on the island. The inscription on the base of the structure bears the writing “La kuvvete illa billah (There is no power other than God)” on the left and “mashallah (praise be)” on the right. The mihrab and the pulpit are quite simple and the interior of the mosque is sunlit. Its single dome is supported by marble columns. Devamını oku:
