Xow, if we look at the picture of the great locks in tlicSt. Marys Falls Canal, we can see tlie process actuallygoing on. In this canal there are two locksside by side with a power house between them operation to furnish the power needed to operate thegates. In the distance, on the left of the picture, the upperlevel of the canal can be seen. Nearer to us is a vessel i84 TWO BUSY LOCKS in the lock. We can see that the flood gates are beingopened, for the water is rushing out, white with foam, directly toward us. It will not be long before the waterhas all run out and the ship been dropped to the lowerlevel and then be ready to leave the lock. The lower levelis shown in the foreground, and on it another vessel iswaiting to enter the lock and be raised. On the right-hand side of the power house a third vessel has been low-ered from above and is just passing out of the other lock. Probably none of the large-sized locks in the world aremore busy
