Plate at the Tavannes Tunnel (Tunnel de Tavannes) in the Verdun region, a 1200m long railway tunnel first constructed in 1873 1874, served as a giant bunker, barracks, first aid post and ammunitions depot during World War I, on 4 September 1916 about 500-1000 French soldiers died due to an explosion and fire in the tunnel. Next to the old one a newer tunnel was constructed in 1936
