Mr. Brown (whose portrait is givenabove), was the son of a working carpenter inWashington, D. C. He studied law and was ap-pointed as private Secretary to the late Presi-dent Garfield, to whom his rare fidelity untiringenergy and Christian character greatly endearedhim.
