I encountered this emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator: 30 cms.), apparently examining two soft corals. These angelfish are found on reefs in the warmer waters of the Indo-Pacific regions, where they feed on sponges, algae and small invertebrates. Their beautiful appearance makes them a particular favourite of underwater photographers. Sadly, they are also collected for the aquarium species exhibits the remarkable phenomenon of ontogenetic colour change, with the juvenile stage having a completely different, if equally striking, pattern of blue and white rings.
