He seems to have been awise ruler and to have been the first of thegreat Emperors. His grandson, who wasalso Emperor, continued his good work andearned the reputation of being the restoreror even founder of true astronomy. But the most famous of Hwangtis succes-sors was his great grandson Yao, who isstill one of the most revered of all Chineserulers. He was diligent, enlightened,polished, and prudent, and if his wordsreflected his actions he must have been mostsolicitous of the welfare of his people. Heis specially remarkable for his anxiety to dis-cover the best man to succeed him in V-^c. 20 CHINA: PAST AND PRESENT. government, and dlringthe last twenty-eightyears of his reign he associated the ministerChun with him for that purpose. On his death he left the crown to him, andChun, after some hesitation, accepted thecharge, but he in turn hastened to secure theco-operation of another minister named Yuin the work of administration, just as he hadbeen associated with Yao. The period cov-ered by the rule of this triumvirate is con-sidered one of the most brilliant and perfectin Chinese history, and it bears a resem-blance to the age of the Antonines.
