Inaccordance with recommendations of this committee made at alater date, an act was appro\ed by the legislature. April 13. the school. The institution was to be placed under. Carbondale Churches in 1S40 lid [iriiit the general control of a board of trustees composed of the presi-dents of the county agricultural societies and the president andvice-president of the State agricultural society. A second char-ter was issued vmder date of February 22, 1855, in which theboard was constituted of thirteen members, four of whom wereex-officio officers—the Governor of the State, Secretary of State,President of the State Agricultural Societv and the Principal ofthe college. After much investigation the site for the institution waschosen in Centre county, very near the geographical center of theState, in a locality noted for its beautiful scener}-. fertile soil, andpure water.
