Pisa, Tuscany, Italy: this stylised but ferocious-looking lion seems poised to leap from the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption) on the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). The lion is one of two that flank the central lunette in the west façade, which was added by master mason Rainaldo or Rainaldus in the distinctive Pisan Romanesque style of architecture in about 1130 AD, around 60 years after the cathedral had been founded.
