Joseph-Michel de Montgolfier (1740-1810), French pioneer of aeronautics who invented, with his brother Jacques-Etienne, the hot-air balloon. Here, Joseph is holding on to balloon ropes and his name is given as Guiseppe Michele Montgolfier. In 1783 the brothers constructed a paper-covered canvas balloon equipped with a portable stove burning wool and straw to produce hot air. On 19 September 1783 it was used to carry three animals. The balloon was used for the first successful human flight on 19 November 1783. Joseph himself only ascended once in a balloon. This illustration dates from between 1790 and 1850.
