He soon built up a re-munerative practice and became known as a success-ful and skillful advocate, and during a period oftwenty-five years gave himself unremittingly to hiswork. In 1851, he became interested in the FoxRiver improvement, being the originator of theproject, and gave to it his attention till to this movement he had accumulated asmall capital which he had invested in lands, andwhich had grown to a handsome fortune ; most of it,however, was lost in this enterprise. Aside from the regular duties of his professionMr. Martin has been called to fill many positions ofresponsibility and public trust. In 1831 he waselected to the legislature of Michigan, and servedin that capacity as long as Michigan remained aterritory. After the organization of Wisconsin herepresented his district in the legislature from 1838till 1844, when he resigned the position. In thefollowing year he was elected a delegate to congressfrom Wisconsin and served one term.
