Photographs from 9th November student demo against austerity measures

Photojournalism from N9, 9th November 2011. A student protest attracted thousands in central London amid fears of a repeat of the violence at last winter's student demos. Police had authorisation to deploy plastic bullets, but in the end chose not to use them. However, an extremely heavy police presence lasted throughout the day, as some 4000 officers were deployed to prevent violence. Police swapped to full riot gear around 3, and long shields were also in extensive use, as opposed to the smaller, round shields normally used. Several arrests were made during the course of the day, and there were a few scuffles between police and protesters. Towards the end of the day, around 5-6pm, a group of 40 were contained in a tight cordon and mass arrested under Section 12 for failing to disperse. After the arrival of huge numbers of backup Met riot police, it was eventually decided to de-arrest the protesters and escort them in a cordon to a train station. Police lines closed behind the moving containment and prevented press from following.
