Poeppig also wrote most of the Americanarticles for the Allgemeine Encyclopaedic, editedby Ersch and Griiber. POEY, Felipe (po-ay), Cuban naturalist, b. inHavana, 26 May, 1799 ; d. there, 28 Jan., 1891. of French and Spanish parentage. He madehis studies in his native city, concluding them inthe University of Madrid, where he was graduatedin law. Having a taste for natural history, heabandoned his practice as a lawyer, and began the. study of mollusks, insects, and fishes. In 1825 hesailed for Cuba, and thence, with a collection ofspecimens, for Paris. There he aided in found-ing, in 1827, the Societe entomologique, andcontributed notes and drawings to the flistoirenaturelle des 1833 he returned toHavana and devoted him-self to the study of natu-ral history, making draw-ings of specimens withhis associate, Juan Gund-lach (</. c.), and discover-ing many new specieswhich are included inPfeiffers ; MonographiaHeliceorum 1842 Poey was appoint-ed professor of compara-tive anatomy and zoologyin the University of Ha-vana, and from 1851 till1860 he published at in-tervals his Historia Na-tural de la Isla de Cuba(2 vols., 1860). In 1863 he was appointed to thechair of botany, mineralogy, and geology, and from1868 till 1875 he published in the RepertorioFisico-Natural de la Isla de Cuba, and reprintedin the Anales de la Sociedad de Historia Natural
