Fragment of Minoan style wall painting Blue Monkeys fresco Akrotiri, Mature Cycladic I period 17th cent BC, Thera Prehistoric Museum. INV 344 The fresco of the Blue Monkeys was discovered on the north west wall of room Beta 6. A broad wavy band of unequal width extending across the lower part of the painting probably denoted water. From this rocks rise recalling the Theran landscape of the period. Blue Monkeys climb amongst the rocks. All are depicted in profile except for one. The painting style is a masterpiece of avant garde painting with freedom of composition and intense movement. The varied poses create a relistic scene which suggest that the painted proabably had access to Blue Monkeys that may have been imported from Africa.
