Spitfires over North Africa. Historical image of a formation of 3 Spitfires flying over Djerba island, North Africa, during World War II. These aircraft are Mark VB Spitfires, with the 'clipped' wing adapted for increased roll rate and larger 'desert' oil coolers under the engine. The rear two carry the 'UF' code of 601 Squadron RAF, the aircraft in the foreground uniquely has its pilot's initials as its code - those of Wing Commander Gleed, commander of 244 Wing, RAF. Photographed in 1943.
