Stone age burial remains. Fossilised remains of a stone age (palaeolithic) human showing evidence of a ceremonial burial. The area around the body was coloured with red ochre at burial. This fossil was found in the Arene Candide cave in Liguria, Italy. It is thought to be around 18,500 years old. At this time, the inhabitants of the region were anatomically-modern Cro-Magnon humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). The Cro-Magnons lived in parts of Europe from around 50,000 years ago, and are famed for their cave painting and their creation and use of tools. They are considered to be the direct ancestors of modern humans.
