He wasthe first president of the /Etna Life InsuranceCompany, assisted in the organization of theRepublican party of this state, and was the firstRepublican Speaker of the House of Repre-sentatives in 1857. Owing to the failure of the General Assemblyto declare who was legally elected his successor,Governor Bulkeley has continued to administerthe office up to the present time.
