Major-General Martin Luther Smith is a native of Western New York, andhas family connections residing in the Northern, Western and Southern States,many of whom are in Mississippi and Louisiana. Entering West Point as a cadet, in 1838, he graduatedin 1842, when he was commissioned in the corps of Topographical Engineers,and seut to the coast of Georgia on duty, since which time he has been engaged,without intermission, south of Masou and Dixons line. In 1846, he marriedMiss Nesbit, of Georgia, belonging to a family well known and among the mostprominent and influential in that State. At the opening of the Mexican warhe was first ordered to Texas, but subsequently joined General Scott in thecity of Mexico, where he remained on active duty until the Unit
