Square Dish with Design of Plovers over Waves, c. 1700. Brothers Kenzan and Korin collaborated on many artistic endeavors. Kenzan especially contributed many original designs to the repertory of Edo period ceramics. This serving dish is one of a set used for displaying tea cakes. The design of plovers flying over waves derives from Heian period (900s-1100s) literature and later lacquerware designs. It was freely drawn by Korin in iron oxide, after which the dish was covered with a clear glaze.
