SOUTH GEORGIA, ATLANTIC OCEAN: EYE-WATERING pictures show a FOUR-TONNE southern elephant seal mating with one “lucky” mate from his harem of one hundred females. Pictures from this British territory show the vastly outweighed female – by a ratio of four-to-one - pinned to the floor by this heavy-weight of the animal kingdom. Thankfully on this occasion the act of love-making only lasted ten minutes, but has been known to go on for a marathon 30-minutes. Other pictures show the wider harem who will eventually all get a visit from their “beach master” – a common name for the dominant male bull.

Also sharing the space are thousands of penguin onlookers, creating a spectacular and comical scene. Photographer David Merron (38) captured these moments at Gold Harbour beach, South Georgia, a British island in the South Atlantic.
