Ancient fortress of Masada, Judaean Desert, Israel.

Ancient mountain of Masada, Judaean Desert, Israel. The siege of Masada by troops of the Roman Empire (circa 74 AD) led to the mass suicide of 960 Jewish rebels including "Zealots" and their families. Herod the Great had previously built palaces on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. Today, inductees to the Isreali Defence forces take a solemn oath that "Masada will never fall again"
