At one timewhile a passenger on a brigantine in the Gulf of Mexico, the yellowfever broke out and the crew reduced to one man. With his as-sistance, and such knowledge as Mr. Tilson had acquired of naviga-tion while a passenger, they managed to reach Moro Castle, Havana,after 18 days. Signals of distress were made, and some boats froman English ship of war and United States man of war brought theminto port in a crippled condition. Nearly all the sails were blownaway, there not being men enough to take care of them. In early life Col. Tilson was trained in the Congregational Church,but afterwards accepted the Universalist doctrine. His first vote. MRS. MARY P. (SAWYER) TILSON TILSON GENEALOGY. 109 for President was for John Q. Adams. He has voted every electionsince that time. The colonel was a man of strong character and ofprepossessing appearance, more than medium size and offine form.
