Ringer has procured it at Nagasaki, where it was also obtained by the Siebold Expedition (Temminck and Schlegel, Fauna Japonica, Aves, p. 108). The Dunlin is a circumpolar species, and visits the British Islands in great numbers, but European examples are, on an average, slightly smaller than those from Asia and America. 338. TRINGA MARITIMA. (PUHPLE SANDPIPER.) Tringa maritima, Gmelin, Syst. Nat. i. p. G78 (1788). The Purple Sandpiper has a nearly black rump and upper tail- coverts j but the seventh, eighth, and ninth secondaries are nearly all â Trinya maritima.
