When Abd al-Rahman proclaimed himself Caliph in 929, he founded the palatial city of Madinat al-Zahra as his personal residence and capital of the new Caliphate state. The Upper Basilica is part of the administrative section of the palace. It comprises a set of rooms and courtyards for official use around a large basilica room with five naves.
