Hubble Space Telescope. Illustration of the Hubble Space Telescope facing the glowing centre of the spiral galaxy M100 (NGC 4321). The Hubble Telescope is the most sensitive optical telescope yet constructed. It was placed in orbit by a space shuttle in 1990 and cost a total of $ billion to construct and deploy. In 1993 a servicing mission was carried out to replace several instruments on the telescope and repair an optical fault in the main mirror. It is seen here with its protective front door open and with antennae and solar panels outstretched.
