Just 60 km off the Venezuela coastline in South America the 444 square kilometers island Curacao is situated in the rain shadow of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles and has a semi-arid tropical climate. Capital is Willemstad with people living there in 2013. Fort Amsterdam was constructed in 1634 as a fortress and the headquarters of Dutch West India Company. Nowadays it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Willemstad and the seat of the government of Curacao. In der Karibik liegt die 444 Quadratkilometer große Insel Curacao im Regenschatten der Inseln über dem Winder der Kleinen Antillen. Hauptstadt des Landes und der Insel ist Willemstad, dort lebtern 2013 mit Einwohnern der Großteil der Inselbevölkerung. Vor allem die bunten historischen Gebäude haben der Stadt den Status eines UNESCO Weltkulturerbes eingebracht. Teil des Welterbes ist auch das 1634 erbaute Fort Amsterdam. Ursprünglich war es Befestigungsanlage und Hauptquartier der holländischen Westindien-Kompanie, heute ist es Sitz der Regierung von Curacao.
