Becoming numerous BishopVertin gave them in the fall of 1889 apriest in the person of Rev. Raphael Ca-vicchi. Under his supervision arrange- ments were made for the formation of anItalian congregation. In the spring of1890 they purchased lot 3 in Block 4 inGays subdivision to Iron Mountain andcommenced the erection of a frame churchwith rooms over the sacristy for the ac-commodation of the pastor. In the fall itwas blessed under the title of the HolyRosary. On November 2, 1893 this struc-ture burned and Father Cavicchi was sentto Spalding from where he directed there-building of it. At the dedication thetitle was changed to that of the ST. Lawrences church, metropolitan, mich. Next pastors: Rev. Joseph G. Pinten, from December20, 1894 to August 21, 1898. Rev. Benjamino Berto, from Septem-ber 10, 1898 to March 30, 1902. Rev. Peter Sinopoli, from April 4,1902 to April 1903. Rev. Aloysius Lango, the present pas-tor, from March 25, 1903. The second church was practically thesame as the first, as it was rebuilt uponwhat was saved from fire. Hence, thescarcity of room was felt as soon as the 344 HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF attendance increased, wliich it didthrough new immigration as also by re-newed practice of religion inspired by pre-ceding pastorates.
