Maud Gonne Edith Maud Gonne (1866-1953) ( Mac Bride). 1898 illustration of the Anglo-Irish revolutionary, suffragette and actress Edith Maud Gonne MacBride. Gonne campaigned for the Irish nationalist cause, inspired by the plight of those evicted in the Land Wars. She founded the Irish Nationalist group The Daughters of Ireland and in 1918, was arrested for being a political agitator. She became severely ill in prison and after her release, began a crusade for improved conditions for Ireland's political prisoners. Gonne had a relationship with poet William Butler Yeats, becoming the inspiration for many of his poems.
