People are going to and from the main railway station (located to the left of this image) and the flags of many nations are on display. Also being flown is the flag of The Council of Europe (right). This early use of this flag features a circle of 12 gold stars on a blue background, symbolising the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe. It dates back to 1955. In 1983 the European Parliament decided that the flag should be used by the Council of Europe. In 1985 it was adopted as the official emblem of the European Communities (later the European Union). Centre is the facade of the Circus-Theater Albert Schumann (Circus Schumann or Schumann Theatre). It was located between Karlstrasse and Taunusstrasse. What had remained of the building after Allied bombing of March 1944 was demolished in 1960. This image is from an old amateur 35mm Kodak colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
