THK BREAD-LINE AT BATON ROUGE This piotnrc was taken just at the close of the war in 18(io. It is a remarkable and interesting picture. The Verandah House, thebuilding shown on the left, is where General \V. T. Sherman stopped in when he was Superintendent of the Louisiana Seminaryof I^arning and Military .\cademy. The group of colored people lining the sidewalk are waiting for their issue of rations. The skillof Lytic, the photographer, is shown by the fact that the man walking is hardly blurred and the mules ears in the foreground mighthave been taken by an instantaneous shutter. The view below shows the home of the Union soldiers who remained in Baton Rouge fromits occupation on May \i, 1862. Rrigadier-Cicneral Thomas Williams had been assigned from Butlers force at New Orleans to assistFarragnt to dear the Mississippi. Williams headquarters was Baton Rouge, but during most of May, June, and July he was in thevicinity of Vicksbnrg operating in conjuncti
