Science fiction story, 19th-century artwork. This artwork accompanied the republication in serial form of the earlier science fiction story 'Aventures extraordinaires de Trinitus' (1869) by the French doctor and science writer Pierre-Jules Rengade (1841-1915). Written under the pseudonym Aristide Roger, this story told of various adventures under the sea in a submarine. It was suggested, but denied, that this story may have inspired Jules Verne's more famous 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' (1870). Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
