Tools for Land cutting tubes and pipes have been or someyears in use, but whatever their conveniences, each one hashad some objectionable feature, one of the commonest ofwhich is the rigidity of position of the cutter, whether rotaryor fixed, which would not give to any inequality on the pipeand must be forced through all obstructions. This objection,probably more than all others combined, has delayed andobstructed the general introduction of hand tube cutters,. of thin bars or articles made from thin sheets of iron or steel,may be all-sufficient. It is unnecessary to recapitulate and enumerate the advan-tages of my invention, since all, and especially workers inmetal will readily appreciate the value and extent to whichmy invention may be applied successfully. Articles madefrom iron can be carbonized and hardened at a slight expense,60 as to have a surface equal in resistance and hardness tothe best tempered steel, while at the same time having anelasticity, owing to the malleability and toughness of thecentral parts, which prevent the breaking or cracking of thearticles.
