Village before reaching Tonle Sap Lake. Houseboats and boats in Sangker River, Cambodia. The drought in the largest lake in Cambodia puts the life of fish and forests in check. Tonlé Sap is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and the most productive inland fishing center in the world. In many places where native forest once grew, drab, barren, treeless farmland now converges as far as the eye can see. The fires, which are often set to clear land for agricultural uses, have further diminished the flooded forest. Deforestation and environmental degradation can inflict devastating economic damage on the nearly one million Cambodians who live around the lake and several million more who depend on it for fish, the country's main source of protein.
