Directly across Main Street from this painted mural is Tupelo Hardware, where in 1946 Elvis Presley's mother, Gladys, bought him his first guitar. 11-year-old Elvis came in with his mom who wanted to buy him a bicycle for his birthday. Elvis wanted her to buy him a rifle. Tupelo Hardware sold both, but neither party was happy with the other's idea of a gift. So, a compromise was reached. Mom bought the guitar.
