For this purpose a compress of old soft linen cloth may belaid upon the wound, and retained by a bandage encircling the method is to sew the wound together, using one or morestitches as the case may require, remembering always that the less thebetter, provided the object is attained. A common sewing-needle ofsufficient strength will answer the purpose in these cases, if there isno other at hand. It should be oiled before it is used, and enough ofthe skin should be included to hold the parts together, that is, so thatthe thread shall not tear out. Each stitch is tied by itself, as seen infig. 154. The stitches maybe taken out in from one to two or threedays, by carefully clipping the thread at one side, and pulling gently,at the knot.
