Four years later he entered into partner-ship with Judge Williams, having already achievedwude notice because of his legal abilities. He wassent as Representative to Congress by the Whigs in1829, remaining there five years and serving duringthe whole of this period as a prominent member ofthe Judiciary Committee. He resigned from Con-gress in 1834 to devote himself to his private prac- 39- UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR SONS tice, and in 1838 was elected Governor of the Stateof Connecticut, holding office until 1842, in whichyear he declined to become a candidate for theUnited States Senate. In 1847 he was elected. Lawrence; has since practised his profession in NewYork City. JOSEPH FREDERIC KERXOCHAX, Lawyer,was born in New York City, December 8,1842, the son of Joseph and Margaret SeymourKernochan. The family is originally of North ofIreland stock, but has long been settled in Orangecounty, New York. Mr. Kernochan was fitted forCollege at Mr. Skinners School in New Haven, andentered Yale in 1859 graduating as Bachelor ofArts in 1863. He studied law in the ColumbiaLaw School, taking his degree in 1865 and beingValedictorian of his Class. After the completionof his law course he spent eighteen months in theoffice of Hon. Abraham R. Lawrence, now a Justiceof the Supreme Court of the State of New York,and was admitted to the Bar. Since then has been actively engaged in the practiceof his profession in New
