Mystic Marriage by André Durand (1981) is the first allegorical picture the artist painted, moved by the fairy tale imagery of Royal wedding. The Royal Wedding has been transferred by the artist to a beach in Nazaré Portugal. A regal Egyptian woman disembarks from Egyptian Funeral Boat carrying a baby boy who is holding a rose as he offers the Princess a ring. Nervously, she glances back at the Prince as she proffers her finger in acceptance of the ring. Fisherman in the foreground push a boat carring an ox and an ass out to sea.
Mystic Marriage' by the Neomodernist artist, André Durand (1981) is the first allegorical picture the artist painted, moved by the fairy tale imagery of wedding of Princess Diana to Prince Charles. The young bride and her prince are depicted, not in London but on a beach in Nazaré, Portugal at sunset. Princess Diana is a veiled, ethereal figure, accepting a ring from an infant boy, borne by an Egyptian Queen. The babe holding a rose, is reminiscent of the infant Jesus, Princess Diana of Saint Catherine. In this allegory Durand alludes to the countless paintings of the mystic marriage of Saint Catherine, a popular subject for artists since the fourteenth century.
