The Ciapela Tower is an ancient defensive bulwark located in the historic centre of Sanremo. It was erected by the Genoese around 1550 (but some scholars date it back to 1130) for defensive purposes towards the Saracen raids. To obtain the construction of this structure the local population had to swear allegiance to the Republic of Genoa.
