The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer, official name: antifaschistischer Schutzwall, anti-fascist protection barrier was a system of fortifications built by the government of East Germany (German Democratic Republic, pro-Soviet) to prevent the free movement of persons between West Berlin (Federal Republic of Germany) and the territory of East Germany. It was considered the symbol of the iron curtain, the European boundary between the US and the Soviet zone of influence during the cold war.
