Vitamin D3 800 IU (international unit) soft capsules. They are taken as a dietary supplement to prevent or treat a vitamin D deficiency. The active substance is colecalciferol (vitamin D3). Each capsule contains mg colecalciferol corresponding to 800 IU vitamin D3. Vitamin D is necessary to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body to promote bone health and development. It is naturally synthesized in skin and functions as a pro-hormone, being converted to calcitriol. Though it is also found in some foods, the best source of vitamin D comes from the exposure of bare skin to the ultraviolet B (UVB) rays in sunlight. Currently a daily supplement of 10 mcg (μg), equivalent to 400 IU, is recommended, but doctors may prescribe 800 IU (20 micrograms) for the elderly, and those with bone conditions such as osteoporosis.
