Megantereon dirktooth cat, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is an example of a sabre-toothed cat. It lived from million to around 500,000 years ago, from the Early Pliocene to the Middle Pleistocene. It was a powerful predator, reaching a shoulder height of around 70 centimetres. Its fossils have been found in North America, Eurasia, and Africa.
